The Best Answer To The Question: Should I Get a Degree in Sociology?

For many in society, the answer to this is a flat “No.”

I can describe some of the reasons why. Some may say that students with sociology degrees don’t have any marketable skills. It is just a major that talks about race and gender issues, and other than the one diversity officer who gets hired in every company, what else can you do with it?

My answer is also no.

If someone only wants to get a degree in sociology, don’t. If, however, you are interested in one of the topics that sociologists study, then learn as much as you can, and in the process, you will earn a degree. By learning sociology, you will gain knowledge and skills that are highly leverageable on the job market.

Let me explain.

What is sociology?

I describe sociology in two ways. The first is the type of knowledge one acquires in the major. These are the concepts, theories, and empirical generalizations about the social forces and institutions that influence human behavior. The second is the skills one needs to acquire that knowledge. These skills include collecting data in the form of interviews, observations, or questionnaires and then using that data to draw conclusions. Most fields of study can be described by the knowledge learned and the skills one acquired.

This description may be foreign to people who have only experienced sociology through secondhand conversations…
